Dr Louw-Waldi Vlok regularly performs no-scalpel vasectomies under general or local anaesthetic, depending on the patient's choice. This procedure takes less than 20 minutes to complete and, the technique is a simple, effective, inexpensive, easy-to-perform method of contraception.

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy procedure is a minor surgical procedure that prevents the sperm from being added to a man's semen, preventing conception during intercourse.

During the procedure, the vas deferens that carry sperm from the testes to the ejaculatory ducts are interrupted.

How is a vasectomy performed?

There are two common types of vasectomies: the conventional technique and the no-scalpel technique.

Conventional technique: Small surgical incisions are made in the scrotum to access the vas deferens tubes. A small piece of the tube will be removed, leaving a small gap between the two vas ends, the vas ends will be occluded and tissue will be placed between the ends. The small incisions will then be sutured together using dissolvable stitches or left to heal naturally.

No-scalpel technique: No scalpel cuts are made during this process. The rest of the procedure is similar to above.

Can vasectomies be reversed?

Although a vasectomy can be reversed, it should still be considered a permanent method of contraception. There is no concrete assurance that the reversal will be successful.

Notably, a man is not considered sterilised until he has given a sample of his sperm for analysis, and the results demonstrate there is no sperm present. Typically, this is carried out 8 to 10 weeks after surgery. A man must continue using contraception throughout this time.

Do vasectomies affect sexual functioning?

Your sex life won't be affected by a vasectomy. Since it does not affect testosterone production, it does not lessen sex desire. Additionally, it has no impact on your ability to maintain an erection or prevent the ejaculation of semen.
